2023 National Magazine Awards: B2B Jury

The National Media Awards Foundation is thrilled to introduce the 2023 National Magazine Awards: B2B jury. This group of judges volunteered their time and expertise to collaboratively evaluate hundreds of pieces of editorial content published in Canadian trade, professional, and association magazines. From everyone at the NMAF and all who submitted entries this year, thank you!


David Agnew

A former senior editor at Azure, David now serves as copy editor for a diverse group of Canadian magazines, including several past National Magazine Award winners.

Ed Bajek

Edward “Ed” Bajek began working in the publishing industry in 1984. Ed has worked domestically and internationally in sales, distribution, circulation, marketing, merchandising and logistics for books and magazines. Ed has worked with some of the largest publishers, wholesalers, and disturbers in the world, helped launch titles from B2B to consumer blockbusters on the newsstand.

Bryan Borzykowski

Bryan Borzykowski is a National Magazine Award-winning journalist who has written for the New York Times, CNBC, Wired, Canadian Business and Maclean’s, among others. He’s also the founder of ALLCAPS Content, an agency that helps companies create editorial-style content. Bryan’s written several personal finance books and appears regularly on CTV News. He’s currently the president of the Canadian Jewish News and past-president of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW).

Lise Boullard

Lise Boullard is a passionate lifestyle editor and writer with over a decade of experience. After completing a master’s degree in publishing from Simon Fraser University, Lise’s French roots drew her east where she served as associate editor of Reader’s Digest in Montreal. Back in Vancouver, Lise joined Glacier Media, where she spent three years living the good life—and writing about it—as managing editor of Vita and Vancouver Living magazines. Lise now works at the forefront of Canada’s digital publishing industry, crafting copy that appeals to both humans (and algorithms) as the owner of Joie Digital Marketing. She also shares her lifestyle musings on her blog, The Editor’s Diary at theeditorsdiary.com.

Fredrik Carlberg

A visual thinker, with interest in the form & function and sustainable practices of all systems and products. Active and responsible consumer applying principles of sustainability wherever possible. Have a great appreciation for simple, elegant, evocative design work in any industry and appreciate the opportunity to guide the strategy and development of any project from brand identities, packaging, editorial projects to websites and new media. Have served as a faculty advisor/educator at York University/Sheridan College design programs. Current clients include B2B sectors in hospitality, food service, grocery, meetings & incentive travel, financial services, recruitment, plumbing & HVAC/R. Specialties: creative direction, brand identity and logo design, content management, graphic design, editorial design, web design and usability.

Peter Carter

Peter Carter is Toronto writer/ editor/ one-time magazine owner and publisher with 35 years experience in Canadian magazines; currently Analysis Editor at Law360 Canada; an online daily news source for Canadian lawyers; author of Pete’s Blog&Grille; National Magazine Awards finalist; accordion player and motorbike enthusiast.

Gail Cohen

Gail Cohen is one of Canada’s most respected legal journalists. She is currently the Canadian Correspondent for American Lawyer Media as well as an editor with the New York-based professional team at Reuters. She was previously the editor in chief of Canadian Lawyer, Law Times and In-House magazines and related digital products. Gail has extensive freelance editing and writing experience and has provided strategic communications advice, editing and writing services to a number of Canadian-based non-profit organizations. She is also an awesome gardener, mushroom hunter, chef and quilter.

Diana Duong

Diana Duong is the news reporter at CMAJ. Her work has appeared in numerous magazines including Chatelaine, Maclean’s and Best Health.

Jacinthe Dupuis

Former Senior Editor for Air Canada enRoute, Jacinthe Dupuis is a lecturer at Université de Montréal. She is currently completing a Master’s in organizational communications where she studies how entrepreneurship trajectories are constituted through a communicational perspective.

Theresa Ebden

Theresa Ebden is the Director of Marketing and Communications programs for Accenture’s global Growth & Strategy organization. Theresa earned her MBA at the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario, earning the academic gold medal and Dean’s list. Prior to Accenture, Theresa was a senior communications strategist at the Ontario Securities Commission. A journalist for 12 years, Theresa reported on company news and Canada’s bond and currency market at Bloomberg News, worked as a business correspondent for The Globe and Mail while working as a producer at CTV’s Business News Network, and started her career at the Toronto Star and the Telegram in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Today, she serves on several volunteer boards including Journalists for Human Rights, Canada’s leading media development organization; and the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics, a global leader in the field of DNA barcoding with the goal to preserve the world’s biodiversity. Theresa also chairs the School of Journalism Industry Advisory Board at the Metropolitan Toronto University, where she graduated with a B.A.A. in Journalism (Print). She is the chair of a non-profit, the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival, an open-air literary festival in Ontario. She enjoys cross country skiing, running, cycling, hiking and spending time with her family in the Greater Toronto Area.

Sasha Emmons

Sasha Emmons has more than 20 years of experience as an editor in New York and Toronto, with stints at iVillage, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Parents, and bylines with CNN, Huffington Post, Chatelaine, Canadian Business and Scholastic. She was editor-in-chief of Today’s Parents for four years, and now heads up Patron Studio, the branded content division at SJC Media.

Kate Evans

Kate Evans is an award winning radio and podcast producer based in Toronto, Ontario. Kate is the senior producer and show runner of Podcast Playlist on CBC Radio 1. Podcast Playlist is the first and longest running podcast curation show in the world. Each week their podcast obsessed producers curate fresh, exciting and thoughtful stories to help listeners unearth new podcasts to add to their rotation. Kate has produced interviews with some of the biggest names in podcasting: Glynn Washington, Anna Sale, Nate DiMeo, Nick Quah, Phoebe Judge, Roman Mars, Sean Rameswaram, Hrishikesh Hirway, Aisha Tyler, Jamie Loftus…and many more. Kate also hosts a national radio column reporting on podcast trends and new releases on CBC Radio 1. In addition to her work at the CBC she is an adjunct professor for the Humber College Radio and Media Production program. She teaches Podcast Production, a course that she developed in 2018.

Daniel Fish

Daniel Fish is the senior editor at Precedent Magazine. He graduated from Carleton University’s journalism program and has a master’s in English from the University of Guelph. Daniel won Gold at the National Magazine Awards for his profile of Michael Bryant.

Rob Gerlsbeck

Robert Gerlsbeck is the managing editor at Smith School of Business at Queen’s University. He has held senior editorial positions at magazines that include MarketingMoneySense and Canadian Grocer. He started his career as a daily newspaper reporter at the Oshawa Times.

Gabrielle Giroday

Gabrielle (Gabe) Giroday is the media relations lead for the Temerty Facuty of Medicine at University of Toronto and editor of U of T Med Magazine. Before joining U of T in 2019, she worked as a newspaper editor and reporter, and as a provincial government spokeswoman. She was a judge for the National Newspaper Awards in 2021.

Mara Gulens

Mara Gulens is a writer and editor whose stories have appeared in publications such as Cairo TodayThe Medical Post and The Globe and Mail. She’s been editor of two Microsoft web portals, the Canada Computes family of publications and the award-winning CMA magazine. Mara’s work on CPA Canada’s dynamic e-newsletter was recognized by Association Media & Publishing and the Canadian Online Publishing Awards. Mara lives and works in Toronto.

Nicola Hamilton

Nicola Hamilton (she/her) is an independent creative based in Toronto, Canada. The bulk of Nicola’s work has been focused on editorial design, acting as a graphic designer and art director for a variety of publications. She began her career at the beloved, city-weekly The Grid (2011-2014.) She’s spent time as Deputy Art Director at Chatelaine (2015-2017) and Art Director at Studio Wyse (2017-2020). Nicola is currently the Art Director at both Best Health Magazine and Precedent Magazine. She’s also the founder of Issues Magazine Shop, a part-time design educator at George Brown College, and President of The Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD).

Rebecca Harris

Rebecca Harris is a writer and editor based in Windsor, Ont. Her work has appeared in numerous business publications including Canadian Grocer, Foodservice & Hospitality, Communication Arts, and Marketing magazine, where she was managing editor. Rebecca currently develops content for a variety of B2B clients and is a freelance project editor for Globe Content Studio.

James Hewes

James Hewes started his career in media working at BBC Worldwide, the commercial division of the BBC, the UK state broadcaster. He worked in their publishing business, BBC Magazines, from 2001 to 2012 building a track record of success in marketing, digital and print media, events and international business development. 

He was the launch Publisher of olive magazine and grew BBC Magazines’ licensing portfolio from 8 to 55 editions including 20 editions of Top Gear Magazine. James was also a key member of the team that sold BBC Magazines to private equity in November 2011 for £120m and was Publishing Director for Top Gear, Good Food, Easy Cook and Lonely Planet Magazine, responsible for the brands across print and mobile applications. He was also a Director of the BBC Haymarket Exhibitions joint venture. 

As Publishing Director of Dubai-based Gulf News Publishing from 2013 to 2016, he had responsibility for more than 30 product areas and launched new brands across digital, live events and print including the group’s first consumer title in Arabic. He was then Interim CEO of The Art Newspaper from 2016-2017 whilst also running his own company, Soho Consulting.
He was appointed President & CEO of FIPP in September 2017 and has re-positioned the 100-year old media trade association as a business focused on learning, knowledge sharing, skills development and networking.

Andy Holloway

Andy Holloway is an editor/writer who has worked for a variety of publications in a variety of positions over the past 30+ years. He’s currently editor of Financial Post magazine, senior features editor of the Financial Post, editor of the weekly FP Investor newsletter and a contributing editor to the National Post.

Brenda Johnstone

Brenda Johnstone brings more than 30 years of trade magazine publishing experience. She launched Convenience & Carwash Canada fifteen years ago and the Women in Carwash™ conference three-and-a-half years ago. Brenda’s wide range of experience includes national and regional trade magazines, national and regional Tradeshow organizing, corporate event planning, golf tournament organization, and more.

Vicky Lee

Vicky Lee is an award-winning art director specializing in editorial design, photo direction and brand communication. Currently the art director at TC Transcontinental Premedia focusing on digital and video direction, she is previously the art director at Designlines Magazine, and associate art director at Azure Media.

Louise Leger

Award-winning journalist, accomplished storyteller, avid fan of alliteration. Born and raised in Montreal, Louise studied English Literature at Bishop’s University, and then launched her career at the Sherbrooke Record, covering everything from sidewalk safety to sovereigntists and celebs. After dabbling in Vancouver life and press junkets to L.A., she put down roots in Toronto. What followed was a blur of entertainment / business / medical journalism, with a few stints editing on national news desks. She then made a semi-pivot to media relations and corporate communications. Today, Louise is a medical / lifestyle / business writer, marketing and social media copywriter and communications consultant. Her company is Catbird Communications.

Leata Lekushoff

Leata Lekushoff is a UX writer in financial services, creating content and experiences across digital banking platforms. She’s previously worked as an award-winning writer, editor, and content creator in publishing and corporate communications. Leata has a background in photography and began her career in film and TV.

Guillaume Levasseur

Journaliste multimedia au Devoir depuis 2016, Guillaume Levasseur est passionné par la représentation visuelle de l’information. Son travail en tant que vidéaste a contribué à développer l’identité video du Devoir au cours des dernières années. Il a une grande passion pour la direction photo et tout ce qui touche l’image d’une video. Geek de nature et grand fan de Star Wars, il détient un diplôme collégial en photographie, un baccalauréat en politique appliquée et un diplôme de deuxième cycle en journalisme.

Gil Martínez

Gil Martínez has more than two decades of design experience and has worked for publishers throughout North America. He has been a member of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers since 2004, where he has reviewed portfolios for junior designers and prospective members, and participated in its Education and Ethics committees. He has received accolades from the HOW International Design Awards, the SoGood Design Awards, the Canadian Business Media Awards and others. In addition to his work as art director for Newcom Media Inc.’s Financial Group, Gil writes about branding and design for the financial industry, has written a book about calligraphy and typography, and teaches editorial design at Centennial College.

Hélène Matteau

Stephanie Mitchell

Stephanie C. Mitchell works with lawyers, judges, and senior executives across Canada to help them learn to communicate more clearly and persuasively. She has both a law degree and a first-class honours degree in journalism. She is based in Montréal and regularly beams herself around the world to lead workshops about clear writing and effective public speaking. Stephanie has years of experience choosing the best words as a news reporter and senior producer for CBC Radio in Vancouver, Victoria, and Edmonton. She has also worked in government communications and law school administration.

Stacey Newman

Stacey Newman is a multi-faceted content creator, she has worked as a professional photographer, journalist and writer for over 20 years across Canada and the globe. She is editor-in-chief and content manager for national trade publications STAY Magazine and Grocery Business Magazine. With intense curiosity, a passion for sociology and historiography, Newman is happiest telling compelling stories about people and the events that shape us.

Colleen Nicholson

Colleen Nicholson is an award-winning art director specializing in editorial print design. She works with a variety of iconic Canadian newsstand magazines on redesigns, features, story packages, infographics, digital assets and brand-adjacent projects. Most recently, she has collaborated with teams at Maclean’s and Chatelaine, but her work has appeared in Canadian House and Home, Zoomer, Canadian Business, Away, and Today’s Parent among others. She participates in the larger design community by judging awards, occasionally speaking at conferences and consulting with publications.

Kory Pearn

Publisher and CEO of CRACKYL Media Inc., 20-year Professional Firefighter, and Industry Author & Keynote Speaker who acts as a passionate mental health advocate, spreading awareness on what it takes to not only survive but thrive in the dynamic job of firefighting.  CRACKYL Media Inc. was forged in an effort to help firefighters battle the pressures on and off the job. Other areas of focus and expertise include career longevity education and firefighter health & wellness. CRACKYL Magazine was successfully launched in the spring of 2021 – a lifestyle and health magazine for firefighters across North America and beyond.

Kara Pyle

Kara is an award-winning art director, illustrator and graphic designer based in Toronto/Tkaronto. She lives in the city with her dog named, Adobe. She has had her work published in Reader’s Digest, Orange Coast Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Smithsonian and more!

Bradley Reinhardt

Bradley Reinhardt is an Indigenous Graphic Designer and Artist from Batchewana First Nation of Ojibways in Northern Ontario and is based in Toronto. He has worked as an Art Director at Eye Weekly, Toronto Star, Toronto Life, Toronto International Film Festival and Cottage Life.

Luc Rinaldi

Luc Rinaldi is Toronto Life’s features editor. His work has appeared in Maclean’s, The Walrus and Canadian Business.

Colleen Seto

As a longtime writer and editor, Colleen Seto pounds out prose for regional and national publications such as Avenue Calgary, Chatelaine ,Today’s Parent and The Globe and Mail. She’s currently working with RedPoint Media’s Content Studio and was recently a branded content editor for SJC Media, publisher of Maclean’s, Canadian Business and more. She’s also the former executive director of the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association, and current president of the Amber Webb-Bowerman Memorial Foundation.

Kari Silver

Kari Silver is currently the graphic designer for the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, and is the former art director of Designlines magazine and the associate art director of the award-winning Azure magazine. She is a Registered Graphic Designer (RGD) who specializes in print, editorial and digital design.

Michael Sinanan

Michael is principal at Brainmetal Design. His experience has incorporated publishing, corporate communications, creative design, branding solutions and the fine arts, adding photography and industrial design to his extensive portfolio. With a love for the visual world and a near obsession with how design unites, Brainmetal has become a portal for clients to access his knowledge of business strategies, market intelligence, out-of-the-box creativity and detailed brand delivery. Working from the west to east coast, Brainmetal has explored the varied world of design incorporating international influence to create comprehensive and informed projects. He also received the 2022 Award of Excellence from the Black Designers of Canada.

Andrew Snook

Andrew Snook is a professional writer and editor based in Mississauga, Ontario. Snook has written for more than 50 business-to-business magazines, regional and national newspapers and online publications. His articles have recently earned him three National Magazine Awards: B2B and two Tabbies International Editorial & Design Awards.

Snook also enjoys writing fiction in his spare time and has independently published four books and is also a published poet. His fantasy game book, Dungeon Jest: The Ruby of Power, was awarded the 2022 Specialty Book of the Year at the NYC Big Book Awards. His fiction novel, Remy’s Dilemma: Special Delivery, won the 2022 Distinguished Favorite Award for Comedy Book of the Year at the NYC Big Book Awards; the 2022 Comedy Book of the Year at the Independent Press Awards; and the Bronze Medal at the 2021 Independent Publishers Book Awards for Best Regional Fiction (Canada-West).

Neil Sutton

As the editor of Canadian Security, SP&T News and Sécurité Québec, Neil Sutton manages the content strategy for Annex Business Media’s Security group, including print and digital magazines, websites, events, award programs, and social media presence. Neil has worked with Annex for almost 15 years. Prior to that, he was the editor of the Canadian technology/business publication ITBusiness.ca. Neil is an active member of the security industry, volunteering for the Canadian Security Lifesaver Association as a board member and the Canadian Security Association on its Monitoring Station Symposium organizing committee.

John Tenpenny

An award-winning editor, writer, and content creator, with more than 25 years of experience in delivering high-quality editorial content and special publishing projects. In his previous roles, he worked at the helm of a variety of trade publications, including ReNew Canada, Plumbing & HVAC, Canadian Shipper, Canadian Forest Industries, and Canadian Mortgage Professional.

Joe Thompson

Joe Thompson has been covering the Canadian manufacturing sector for two decades. He is responsible for the day-to-day editorial direction of Canadian Metalworking magazine, providing a uniquely Canadian look at the world of metal manufacturing. An award-winning writer and graduate of the Sheridan College journalism program, he has published articles worldwide in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, pharmaceutical, medical, infrastructure, and entertainment.

Pierre-Luc Trudel

Pierre-Luc Trudel est depuis 2020 le rédacteur en chef d’Avantages, magazine financier auquel il s’est joint en 2014 à titre de rédacteur adjoint. Il se spécialise dans les domaines des régimes de retraite, des avantages sociaux, de la santé au travail et de l’investissement institutionnel. Il a également collaboré au magazine Conseiller et au journal Les Affaires. Trois de ses articles ont déjà été en nomination aux Prix du magazine canadien : B2B, et il a obtenu en 2021 une mention d’excellence dans le cadre des prix En-Tête pour le reportage en santé mentale au travail.

Kristina Urquhart

Kristina Urquhart is a Toronto-based editor with over 15 years of experience in multi-channel B2B and B2C content strategy and development for diverse brands including Applied Arts, Manufacturing AUTOMATION and Pulp & Paper Canada. Today, Kristina runs The Vintage Seeker, an independent B2B/B2C media source and community she founded in 2021 for vintage dealers, resellers and their customers. A Certified Copy Editor and member of Editors Canada, Kristina holds a Bachelor of Journalism (High Honours) with a minor in English Language & Literature from Carleton University. She is passionate about building communities that deliver value through the thoughtful exchange of knowledge.

Lauren Vogel

Lauren Vogel (@ellevogel) is news editor at CMAJ, Canada’s premier medical journal, where she has spent a decade reporting on the healthcare issues that keep doctors up at night. She has received national awards for her reporting on women’s health, sexual health, and physician suicide, and contributes as a health commentator on CBC Radio.

Melony Ward

Melony Ward is a leader in the cultural media sector. She has worked with some of Canada’s best cultural multiplatform brands, working in digital communications, print, television, awards programs, exhibitions and educational extensions. Her focus is excellence in content presentation, building audiences, and developing revenue. Melony is passionate about storytelling, education and citizenship. She is currently Publisher and Director of Business Enterprise for Canada’s History Society.

Tim Wilbur

Tim Wilbur is a licensed lawyer and current Editor-In-Chief of Key Media’s print and digital law publications including Lexpert, Canadian Lawyer, InHouse, and Law Times. He is a graduate of McMaster University with a degree in Philosophy & Human Rights and Juris Doctor Law degree from the University of Toronto. He has over 16 years of publishing experience, starting as the Focus Editor on The Lawyers Weekly publication at LexisNexis and managing legal editorial content for Thomson Reuters. His reporting covers all areas of law in Canada, and he also oversees content for Key Media’s legal events, including the Canadian Law Awards and Lexpert Rising Stars. He has appeared on panel discussions and has chaired and emceed leading events for the legal community in Canada.
