2024 National Magazine Awards: B2B Jury

The National Media Awards Foundation is thrilled to introduce the 2024 National Magazine Awards: B2B jury. This group of judges volunteered their time and expertise to evaluate hundreds of entries submitted by Canadian trade, professional, and association magazines. From everyone at the NMAF and all who submitted entries this year, thank you!

Mohsin Abbas

Mohsin Abbas is a Pakistani-Canadian journalist, filmmaker, and advocate for press freedom with a nearly three-decades-long career. Nominated for an Emmy award, he has passionately shaped narratives since 1993, working as a news/investigative reporter, producer, and fixer across various media platforms in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Canada, and South America. He dedicates himself to revitalizing small community publications and contributes to BBC News South Asian Languages from Canada.

David Agnew

Formerly a senior editor at Azure and the copy editor of a diverse group of Canadian magazines — including several past National Magazine Award winners — David Agnew now serves as the associate editor of Philadelphia-based Risk & Insurance.

Lauren Bailey

Lauren Bailey has worked in publishing for nearly 20 years. She is currently an associate editor at Benefits Canada and its sister publication, the Canadian Investment Review, where she writes articles in the human resources, benefits, pension and investment spaces.

Karine Bénézet

Karine est journaliste et cheffe de pupitre à L'Itinéraire. Finaliste au prix Judith-Jasmin 2022, c'est un peu par hasard, mais guidée par son goût prononcé pour l'information et l'écriture, qu'elle reprend des études supérieures en communication à son arrivée au Québec, avant de se propulser professionnellement dans le milieu journalistique, en 2016. Un milieu qui n'a par ailleurs jamais été très éloigné d'elle puisqu'en France, Karine était chargée de projets dans un réseau national d'information jeunesse. Bryan Borzykowski

Bryan Borzykowski is a National Magazine Award-winning journalist who has written for the New York Times, CNBC, Wired, Canadian Business and Maclean's, among others. He's also the founder of ALLCAPS Content, an agency that helps companies create editorial-style content. Bryan's written several personal finance books and appears regularly on CTV News. He's currently the president of the Canadian Jewish News and past-president of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW).

Suzanne Bowness

Suzanne (Sue) Bowness is a writer, editor and communications consultant. She has written for publications from The Globe and Mail to University Affairs magazine. Since 2002, she has provided content creation, editing and consulting services to corporate clients through her business CodeWord Communications (www.codeword.ca). Suzanne holds a PhD in English from the University of Ottawa and wrote her dissertation on the history of Canadian magazines.

Stacy Bradshaw

As a dedicated professional in B2B Media, Stacy Bradshaw is the Director of Digital Media at Annex Business Media, where she oversees the development, ad opps and digital marketing teams, supporting a substantial portfolio of over 65 Canadian media brands.

Natasha Brar

Natasha Brar is an art director and graphic designer based outside of Toronto, Canada. She has been pursuing her passion for magazines and visual storytelling since her introduction to graphic design in high school. Natasha is currently Art Director of Benefits Canada magazine, she previous designed and art director for STRONG Fitness magazine. Communications (www.codeword.ca). Suzanne holds a PhD in English from the University of Ottawa and wrote her dissertation on the history of Canadian magazines.

Nithya Caleb

Nithya Caleb is a senior managing editor, journalist, social media specialist, project manager and public relations coordinator with over 15 years of experience with various high-profile events and international print and online publications. She is skilled in field reporting, writing stories for B2B and B2C audiences in diverse industries, public speaking, news research and production, developing creative story ideas, finding sources, utilizing multiple social media platforms, blogs, podcasts, and other outlets as well as planning and executing events.

John Carson

John Carson is a seasoned professional of almost 30 years in journalism, editorial, publishing, communications, social/digital media and website content management. Founder of Herb Communications.

Rudy Chabannes

Gail Cohen

Gail Cohen is one of Canada’s most respected legal journalists. She is currently the Canadian Correspondent for American Lawyer Media as well as an editor with the New York-based professional team at Reuters. She was previously the editor in chief of Canadian Lawyer, Law Times and In-House magazines and related digital products. Gail has extensive freelance editing and writing experience and has provided strategic communications advice, editing and writing services to a number of Canadian-based non-profit organizations. She is also an awesome gardener, mushroom hunter, chef and quilter.

Claire Cooper

Claire Cooper got her start at Toronto Life before focusing on custom content, writing and editing for brands such as Sobeys, CAA, and CPA Canada. She is the managing editor at The Walrus.

Nino Di Cara

Nino Di Cara is the founder and president of Electric Autonomy Canada, the B2B media and events company reporting on the electric vehicle industry. In this role, Nino is regularly sought after for comment by media including Global News, CBC, Fast Company, Globe & Mail and others. He has seven years board-level experience in B2B publishing in the UK and 10 years experience in custom publishing agencies in the UK and Canada. Nino is a past president of the National Media Awards Foundation and the recipient of the EV Society’s 2020 Howard Hutt Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Electric Transportation.

Anna-Christina Di Liberto

Anna-Christina Di Liberto is the Director of Newcom Media’s Content Solutions team. Newcom Media is Canada’s premier B2B publisher delivering information and marketing services to a wide variety of industries through magazines, websites, trade shows, and events. The Content Solutions team offers turnkey content marketing services to Newcom Media’s customers. As Director, Anna-Christina leads a team of project managers, writers, editors, and designers to create educational and interactive multi-platform content. She graduated from Toronto Metropolitan University’s Journalism program and completed Humber College’s Project Management Certificate program with honors.

Kristin Doucet

Kristin Doucet is the managing editor at Wahi Realty, a digital real estate platform, where she oversees content development and media relations. She has over 25 years of experience writing and editing for various industries including financial services, education, and real estate.

Camille Dundas

Camille Dundas is the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Canada’s largest Black online magazine: ByBlacks.com. She has led her team to win three national ethnic media awards and Camille was also named among the top 100 Black Canadian Accomplished Women in 2022.

Jacinthe Dupuis

Former Senior Editor for Air Canada enRoute, Jacinthe Dupuis is a lecturer at Université de Montréal. She is currently completing a Master's in organizational communications where she studies how entrepreneurship trajectories are constituted through a communicational perspective.

Daniel Fish

Daniel Fish is the editor at Precedent Magazine. He graduated from Carleton University’s journalism program and has a master’s in English from the University of Guelph. Daniel won Gold at the National Magazine Awards for his profile of Michael Bryant.

Deanne Gage

Deanne Gage is a reporter for Globe Advisor at the Globe and Mail. She has covered the financial advisor market and specialized in personal finance issues for more than two decades. She is the former editor of FORUM and Advisor’s Edge magazines, and was a money columnist for the Toronto Star.

David Gambrill

David re-joined Canadian Underwriter as Editor-in-Chief in November 2017. He was previously Editor and Senior Editor of Canadian Underwriter between 2005 and 2012. Before returning to the publication, he worked as a communications consultant at the Insurance Institute of Canada. Previously, he was a communications adviser with Ontario’s legal regulator, the Law Society of Upper Canada. From 2001-04, he was a staff writer and copy editor for Law Times, a weekly newspaper for the legal profession in Ontario, as well as a regular contributor to Canadian Lawyer magazine.

Robert Gerlsbeck

Robert Gerlsbeck is the managing editor at Smith School of Business at Queen’s University. He has held senior editorial positions at magazines that include Marketing, MoneySense and Canadian Grocer. He started his career as a daily newspaper reporter at the Oshawa Times.

Wendy Glauser

Wendy Glauser is a health and science writer who has written features, news, profiles and Q&As for many publications including, the Globe and Mail, Walrus, Today’s Parent, Medscape, University Affairs, Canadian Medical Association Journal, New Scientist, Maclean’s and more. She has previously won a NMA B2B award for best series. She was a finalist for other National Magazine Awards as well as the Canadian Journalism Federation's Landsberg Award.

Mara Gulens

Mara Gulens is a writer and editor whose stories have appeared in publications such as Cairo Today, The Medical Post and The Globe and Mail. She’s been editor of two Microsoft web portals, the Canada Computes family of publications and the award-winning CMA magazine. Mara’s work on CPA Canada’s dynamic e-newsletter was recognized by Association Media & Publishing and the Canadian Online Publishing Awards. Mara lives and works in Toronto.

Nicola Hamilton

Nicola Hamilton RGD (she/her) is an award-winning editorial designer. For over a decade now she’s been art directing and designing magazines. She’s worked on publications like The Grid, Chatelaine, Air Canada’s enRoute, The University of Toronto Magazine, Best Health and Precedent, to name a few. In July 2022, Nicola took her love of magazines to a whole new level, by opening Issues Magazine Shop. A bricks-and-mortar clubhouse, and magazine retailer, celebrating the people and projects keeping print alive.

Rebecca Harris

Rebecca Harris is an award-winning business writer and editor based in Windsor, Ont. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including Canadian Grocer, Smith Magazine, National Post, Women of Influence, Communication Arts, and Marketing magazine, where she was managing editor. In addition to editorial work, Rebecca develops content for a variety of B2B clients.

Charlotte Herrold

Charlotte Herrold is an editor and content strategist with more than 15 years working in print and digital media and communications. She is currently the editor-in-chief of Canadian Business, which she led through a multi-platform rebrand in 2021. Previously, she was the editor-in-chief of Flare and before that a fashion editor at Elle Canada, and she has held various other positions at SJC Media, Rogers and TransContinental, contributing to national publications such as Chatelaine, Hello! Canada and Today's Parent.

Lauren Heuser

Lauren Heuser founded Canadian Affairs in 2023. Her previous roles include chief strategy officer of a Paris-based news service for young people, deputy section editor at the National Post and corporate lawyer at a global law firm. Lauren holds a JD from the University of Toronto and an MBA from INSEAD. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto Fellowship in Global Journalism.

Scott Jamieson

Scott Jamieson is CEO of Annex Business Media, Canada’s largest B2B media company. He has 33 years of experience in B2B media, from award-winning editor and independent media owner, through events, audience development, media technology and senior management. In addition to launching three media brands, Scott has served on the board of Magazines Canada, serving as Chair for three years, and frequently presents at B2B media events both in Canada and the USA.

Kim Larson

Kim Larson is an experienced award winning, industry-leading art director and designer whose career has been characterized by a combination of versatility and creativity. She’s currently the art director of EDIFY magazine. Kim was also the art director of AVENUE (Edmonton), Eighteen Bridges, LEAP (Alberta Cancer Foundation), Alberta Venture, and Alberta Oil magazines which under her direction won numerous high-profile provincial and national magazine awards. Kim has also art directed and managed several creative, award winning art teams.

Vicky Lee

Vicky is a Toronto-based art director and designer specializing in editorial design, multi-platform marketing and brand identity. She is formerly the Art Director of Designlines Magazine, and the Associate Art Director at AZURE Media, where she created story layouts and print + digital promotions while managing the award-winning art team. She graduated from OCAD University with a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and an award in typographic excellence.

Wayne Leek

28+ years in publishing, from TV Guide, Toronto Life & Shift to leading Food & Drink for more than two decades. Industry supporter with CMC and NMAF judging and still believes in the power and importance of telling Canadian stories.

Leata Lekushoff

Leata Lekushoff is a UX writer in financial services, creating content and experiences across digital banking platforms. She’s previously worked as an award-winning writer, editor, and content creator in publishing and corporate communications. Leata has a background in photography and began her career in film and TV.

Colin Leslie

Colin Leslie is a journalist in Toronto who has worked at the Medical Post for 25 years including the last 13 as editor-in-chief. He’s won gold and silver National Magazine Awards:B2B and before that a number of Kenneth R. Wilson Awards. He’s supervised editorial teams of different sizes over the years. The Medical Post is a six-times a year magazine and a daily newsletter for Canada’s doctors and is a magazine with a 56-year history. He is currently the president of the National Media Awards Foundation.

Karen Lorimer

Karen's career in B2B media started at a five-person magazine as an ad sales rep, followed by a move to Southam Communications, where she became publisher of Process Industries Canada. She later joined Dovetail Communications as Director and VP Sales and Marketing and was also an Instructor and part of the original team that launched the Media Advertising Sales program at Humber College.

Gil Martínez

Gil Martínez has more than two decades of design experience and has worked for publishers throughout North America. He has been a member of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers since 2004, where he has reviewed portfolios for junior designers and prospective members, and participated in its Education and Ethics committees. In addition to his work as art director for Newcom Media Inc.'s Financial Group, Gil writes about branding and design for the financial industry, has written a book about calligraphy and typography, and teaches editorial design at Centennial College.

Paul McLaughlin

A former member of the NMAF board of directors, Paul McLaughlin (www.paulmclaughlin.ca) is an award-winning writer, broadcaster and playwright. He is also an adjunct professor in the Professional Writing Department at York University, where he teaches two senior courses in magazine writing.

Scott Messenger

Scott Messenger lives, writes and edits at his home near Stony Plain, Alberta, supervised most days by the family's pet rabbit, who sits on the desk. Messenger is the author of Tapping the West, a book about Alberta's craft beer boom, and was named Editor of the Year by the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association in 2022. He is a past recipient of a National Magazine B2B Award.

Anna Minzhulina

Anna Minzhulina is an award-winning Canadian art director, designer, photo director, illustrator, and artist based in Montreal. She began her design career at Maisonneuve magazine, where she was art director for over a decade. In 2016, she opened her design studio, which has gone on to work alongside both powerhouse luxury brands and independent artists. In 2018, she became art director for the Experience magazine. Her vision and leadership with the latter magazine has resulted in the publication being awarded more than a dozen international honors for its creative content and design strategies.

Stacey Newman

Stacey Newman is a Canadian photographer, journalist, andeditor-in-chief. She has worked as a media professional for over 20 years across Canada and the globe. She is currently the editor-in-chief, senior contributing editor and managing editor for national trade publications STAY Magazine, Grocery Business Magazine and BlockTalk Magazine respectively. With intense curiosity, and a passion for the social sciences, Newman is happiest telling compelling stories about people, businesses and events that shape us.

Colleen Nicholson

Colleen Nicholson is the art director of Toronto Life magazine. She has a deep and boundless love for editorial design and well-reported journalism.

Kali Pearson

Kali Pearson is an NMA-winning writer and editor who has worked at Chatelaine, Flare, PROFIT, The Toronto Star and The Gazette and BBC. She’s currently Communications Director at Landscape Ontario, which produces two association magazines.

Stephanie Philp

Stephanie is a writer based in Toronto working with the Communications & Public Affairs team at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) to mobilize the research produced at SickKids Research Institute. Previously, she edited PAX International magazine and taught in the Undergraduate Writing Program at Columbia University.

Candice Pinault Novak

Candice Pinault Novak has been leading editorial teams and editing magazines for the past 10 years—specializing in helping higher education institutions communicate strategically and engage their communities through innovative, award-winning print and digital magazines.

Jessica Robinson

Jessica Robinson is the Content Manager of Globe Content Studio, the content marketing division of The Globe and Mail. Prior to joining The Globe, she produced content marketing for Canada’s most beloved magazine brands including Chatelaine and Maclean’s. She pairs journalistic storytelling and insights in uniquely creative executions for brands like Destination Canada, Mastercard and Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation.

Trish Saywell

Trish Saywell is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Far Eastern Economic Review, Toronto Star, Northern News Service, Hong Kong Standard and The Statesman. Most recently she was Editor-in-Chief of The Northern Miner.

Kyle Schruder

Kyle is driven by leveraging design to elevate strategy, communications, and engagements. Kyle has a deep background in branding and editorial design, building the foundations of his design career designing publications and reports for groups like the University of Toronto Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Science, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO), as well as newsstand publications like Opera Canada.

Kari Silver

Kari Silver is the former Art Director of Designlines magazine/Associate Art Director of the award-winning Azure magazine. Currently, she is the in-house graphic designer for the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto. She is a Registered Graphic Designer (RGD) who specializes in print, editorial and digital design.

Michael Sinanan

Michael is Creative Director at Brainmetal Design. His portfolio includes branding, publishing, corporate comms, sports, adding fine arts and fashion photography. He also received the 2022 Award of Excellence from the Black Designers of Canada.

Jen Smith

Jen Smith is a seasoned editor with a knack for weaving compelling narratives that resonate and inspire. As a past editor of Water Canada magazine and editor-in-chief of an international green parenting publication, she has demonstrated her skill in making complex environmental issues accessible to broad audiences. Endless curiosity fuels her mission to educate, engage, and spark dialogues that look to real-world change. Always aiming to learn, listen, and grow, Jen's approach to storytelling is not just to inform, but to ignite a movement towards a more sustainable and conscious world.

John G. Smith

John G. Smith is an award-winning communicator with 35 years of experience in publishing and corporate environments. He is currently Vice-President – Editorial at Newcom Media, Canada’s leading business-to-business publisher and trade show producer. In addition to his role as editorial director of the trucking group, he oversees editorial practices and procedures for publications and websites serving the financial services, insurance, and dental sectors.

Andrew Snook

Andrew Snook has been working as a professional writer and editor for more than a decade, first as a newspaper reporter in the Ottawa area, and later as a magazine editor and feature writer for a variety of business publications. He is currently the owner of Snookbooks Publishing and founder of Canadian Independent Publishers Magazine.

Joe Thompson

Joe Thompson has been covering the Canadian manufacturing sector for two decades. He is responsible for the day-to-day editorial direction of Canadian Metalworking magazine, providing a uniquely Canadian look at the world of metal manufacturing. An award-winning writer and graduate of the Sheridan College journalism program, he has published articles worldwide in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, pharmaceutical, medical, infrastructure, and entertainment.

Michael Tong

Based in Toronto, Michael is the senior art director at Spafax, a global content marketing and media sales agency. He has worked on multimedia projects for a variety of luxury and lifestyle clients including Air Canada, Fairmont, Birks, Lindt, Bombardier, Hudson's Bay, Interac, Ford and Corby Spirit & Wine. A cross-platform creative, Michael brings his interests in food, art, and travel to life through editorial and digital design.

Pierre-Luc Trudel

Pierre-Luc Trudel est depuis 2020 le rédacteur en chef d’Avantages, magazine financier auquel il s’est joint en 2014 à titre de rédacteur adjoint. Il se spécialise dans les domaines des régimes de retraite, des avantages sociaux, de la santé au travail et de l’investissement institutionnel. Il a également collaboré au magazine Conseiller et au journal Les Affaires. Hannah Trumper

Hannah Trumper is the Director of Audience Development at Newcom Media with 10+ years experience in marketing, circulation and audience development (previous stints include TC Media and AZURE). Focused primarily on digital acquisition and retention, it’s her job to find and keep readers. When she’s not executing a marketing plan or fighting with an excel spreadsheet, she enjoys competitive baking shows and meandering local neighbourhoods.

Kristina Urquhart

Kristina Urquhart is a Toronto-based editor and founder who's worked in multi-channel B2B and B2C content strategy and development for diverse titles in the arts, manufacturing, technology and retail sectors since 2007. Today, Kristina is editor and publisher of The Vintage Seeker, an online magazine and community she founded in 2021 for vintage vendors, antiques dealers, shoppers and supporters of the secondhand economy.

Tim Wilbur

Tim Wilbur is a licensed lawyer and current Global Managing Editor of Key Media's print and digital law publications, including Lexpert, Canadian Lawyer, InHouse, Law Times and Australasian Lawyer. He has over 18 years of publishing experience, starting as the Focus Editor on The Lawyers Weekly publication at LexisNexis and managing legal editorial content for Thomson Reuters. He is a graduate of McMaster University with a degree in Philosophy & Human Rights and a Juris Doctor Law degree from the University of Toronto.

Renee Wilson

Renee Wilson is a communications manager for Peel Region. Prior to joining government corporate communications, she was a magazine writer and editor, serving as editor in chief of Design Engineering (a Rogers Media trade publication) and with bylines in THiS magazine, Today’s Parent and Canadian Family. She was a professor of magazine journalism at Humber College and at the University of Guelph-Humber, and achieved merit standing in her masters degree in Creative and Media Education from Bournemouth University in the UK.

Vicki Wood

Vicki Wood is the editor of Pharmacy Practice + Business magazine and editor of the pharmacy website at CanadianHealthcareNetwork.ca.
